Physical characteristics : Measuring between 10 and 14 millimetres, the green fly is slightly larger than the domestic fly. It has a metallic colouring, either green and silver or green and gold with black spots. It's wings are transparent and it's antenna and legs are black.
Behaviour : The green fly is very common worldwide. The green fly larva is very important in the elimination of cadavers.
Diet : The larva is a pale yellow or light grey maggot that eventually reaches 14 millimetres in length. Feeds on animal tissue that has necrotized and this allows it to develop in 2 to 10 days depending on temperature.
Reproduction : The eggs are laid in packs of twenty. The eggs are placed at the site of a animal injury, a carcass or faeces.
Other : The larva of these insects are used in asticotherapy and hospitals to treat certain wounds.
