Cigarette Beetle

Physical characteristics : The adult has an oval shape. It measures 2 to 4 millimetres and is a brown red color.

Behaviour : The beetle can be found all over the world but it prefers tropical climates. When obliged to live in the cold they hibernate in heatedbuildings to survive.

Diet : It feeds itself off a wide variety of dried animal or vegetable products, including cereal and cereal derived products. The beetle can cause outstanding damages to stored tobacco

Reproduction : The beetle mates in temperatures varying between 20 and 38 degrees celsius and with humidity levels around 25%. The female will lay about 100 eggs in her lifetime. She lays the eggs individually in crevasses or small cracks. The larva is white and covered in long bristles. It takes the shape of a crescent and remains motionless during it's growth period. It measures 3 to 4 millimetres in length. In optimal conditions such as 30 degree celsius temperature and 70% humidity. The larva pupates in a cocoon built from food matter.
The biological cycle takes 45 to 50 days to be complete.
